Moving a piece outside the board

I used to be able to drag a piece outside the board, and it would move to the nearest square inside the board. This was very useful in fast games, especially when castling.

However, now, the move is canceled. See the attempted Rh8 at 14 minutes and 23 seconds in this video (Episode 6 of ChessWhiz TV): http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/46854330

In a previous version of the site, the move would have been completed. Would it be possible to bring back this "feature"?
I find the new feature helpful, because sometimes i hold a piece in the air for several seconds thinking where to move it and then i change my mind and i'm not 100% sure where the piece was before i raised it. That's when i drop the piece outside the board and i can know for sure the piece will return to its original place without a mistake.
TinchoVM, in that case, you could release the piece over another of your pieces. There's no way a capture of your own piece would be legal! :-)
The change is intentional. It's more intuitive for most players to get the piece out of the board to cancel a move. And it's more consistent with the puzzles and the board editor.
I think it's a good idea to put a note one the Play UI that says "release piece outside board to cancel move". It will relieve any misunderstandings or "I don't know how to cancel this move"-moments.
Having a highlighted mark, where the piece originally was, could help.
I always move it on top of the opponents king. You never know.
