Announcing the Lichess World Championship

I think it'd be great - and I said so about 5 years ago, when the idea was accepted but nothing ever happened with it - if we could have a sort of knockout cup, where anyone could enter. A bit like the English FA Cup in football. The small sides might not have a realistic chance of winning, but imagine the drama if say a titled player was knocked out by a 1400 player in 1+0.
My highest congratulations to Minh Le, the newest and greatest of the World Champs!
For those of us who remember the PCA-and-FIDE mess, when we had *two* world chess champions at the same time, blogs like this are a breath of fresh air.

I only hope Magnus doesn’t get the notion to create the next PCA. While I honor Kasparov’s decision to leave FIDE, and even consider the succession Kasparov then Kramick then Anand, and while ultimately it’s the world chess champion who decides under what terms to contest their title, I would not want another PCA-vs-FIDE split.

Some background to explain the controversy here:

The chess world championship is a very old and very strong tradition in the world of chess. We had had, since 1886, only 16 well defined world chess champions: Steinitz, Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Euwe, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Tal, Petrosian, Spassky, Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov, Kramick, Anand, and Carlsen. Pretty much anyone 2000 or above can name them all from memory; the chess master who improved me from an 1100 to a 1400 made sure I knew who they all were.

Now, back in the 1990s, there was a lot of controversy because Kasparov decided to leave FIDE and have his own world chess championship, the PCA. Because of this, we had this messy situation where we had two official world champions at the same time. Since the world championship has been around longer than FIDE, and since it’s up to the current world chess champion to decide how they will match against their possible successor (as long as they have a match; Alekhine died and Fischer refused to play chess, so in those cases the next champion was decided without matching the current champion), general consensus is that we follow PCA’s list of world chess champions until the unification match of 2006, when FIDE determined the world chess champion again.

Point being, with chess.com having this thing and calling it the “world championship”, a lot of us who remember the whole PCA mess are like: No way, not unless the winner matches against Magnus face to face at classical time controls before getting the crown.
I solved the puzzle to make this post, can I now join the Lichess World Championship too?!

I do not qualify for the other world championships because I am not a good enough player and/or do not pay a monthly fee. :-(
quite great bullshit if only titled player are allowed to complete.
also i expect a lot of bullshit games because of lack of time increment.

shame on lichess for finding no better solution !!!
My favorite chess championship was the championship of 1972 when Bobby Fischer play vs Spassky.
I think this is a great idea, and Lichess- props to you for pursuing it. I wonder if you could hold lower-ranked championships, such as U2000 championships? (feel free to take this with a grain of salt)
"... ours zooms along at 3+0 and 1+0 ... players get a shot at ours every 2 weeks!"

This a belated April fool's joke ??
